The base material for this simple craft is something that is in abundant supply at this time of year – recycled cardboard!

It’s been a few years now since we’ve made an actual gingerbread house here at home, but we love the gingerbread theme nonetheless so I thought it could be fun to make some decorations instead.

There are lots of really lovely recycled cardboard gingerbread house tutorials on the internet/social media already and for a simpler version of the craft below, do feel free to seek some of those out…

For this craft I’ve used a favourite technique involving ‘drawing’ with hot glue, and covering the cardboard with white tissue paper and PVA & water mixture. This way of working can create a 3-dimensional effect and the tissue paper, glue & water strengthen the overall structure making something slightly more robust and enduring. I also like the way that the raised hot-glue artwork covered with the tissue paper really adds to the fairytale feel when it’s dried and painted. If you stick with white tissue paper for this craft, it dries clear, showing the original cardboard colour underneath so that it still resembles gingerbread 😊

I’ve used acrylic paint pens to decorate my gingerbread house – fine tipped pens are good for detailed work, but you could use any paint pen, or even acrylic paint, depending on preference.

You could make a collection of gingerbread houses, or one beautiful big gingerbread house or anything in between – feel free to play with shape and size for this craft!

This craft would make a super cute homemade festive gift, too 😊

Wishing you a peaceful festive season, filled with plenty of warmth and light and of course lots of…

Happy Crafting!
